Ryoan-ji is a Zen temple located in northwest Kyoto. The temple garden is considered to be one of the finest examples of a kare-sansui, a Japanese rock garden, or zen garden, in Japan.
The garden is a rectangle of 340 square meters. Placed within it are fifteen stones of different sizes, carefully composed in five groups. The stones are surrounded by white gravel, which is raked each day by the monks.
