Do you know this bird?

I saw this bird walking on the street on the 200 block of Eureka this morning.

It doesn't look like any of the wild birds that I've seen around. Made me think maybe it belongs to someone? Or, is it wild, and I just haven't seen any like it before?

I tried approaching it slowly, but it ran away from me. (Did not fly.)

Haven't seen any other bird like it before. Is anyone familiar with it?

rina,

It is a juvenile Black-crowned Night-Heron. Latin name is Nycticorax nycticorax; on of the tautonyms where the genus and the species is the same word in Latin. The reason it did not fly was because it was a juvenile bird.

Alisa, sent me to your blog.

Take care,

Thank you, Vivek! Mystery solved. Is it unusual for a bird like this to be walking around in the middle of San Francisco? I've never seen another one like it here in the City.
