My Mom started having us make Mousie Cookies every Christmas years and years ago. It's become an annual tradition!
We've experimented a few times (replacing the currant eyes that the recipe calls for with icing, and the red hot candy that it calls for with icing) and today we tried yet another change. We cut up tiny pieces of black licorice for the eyes, and we think we've found a winner!
Here's the evolution of the Mousie Cookie:
Mom and Sis forming the dough
licorice eyes and peanut ears
Baking in the oven
the red licorice tail is added right after the mousies come out of the oven
cooling on the rack
Mom adds the red frosting noses
an army of mousie cookies!
packed up and ready to go to their new homes!
