2011 SF 3Day Route and Cheering Stations

The walk is only 4 days away!!!

We meet Friday morning between 5:00-6:00 at the Cow Palace (moo). Opening ceremonies start at 6:30, after which, we head out on the first day of 20 miles!

In case you're interested, the 3-Day web site posted the general description of the route that we'll be walking Friday, Saturday and Sunday:

Friday: Approximately 20.1 miles
The San Francisco Bay Area 3-Day will begin with an inspirational Opening Ceremony at Cow Palace in Daly City. From there we will make our way down to beautiful Lake Merced. Enjoy views of the Pacific Ocean as we travel north along the Great Highway. After an invigorating cheering station at the base of the Cliff House, we’ll begin the gradual climb to our lunch stop and an amazing view of the headlands. From there, we’ll follow the remarkable Lands End Trail into Sea Cliff, the Presidio and neighborhoods such as Presidio Heights, Pacific Heights and Fisherman’s Wharf. The highlight of the day comes when we catch a ferry in Fisherman’s Wharf to camp on Treasure Island, our home away from home for the weekend! When we dock at Treasure Island, the route will take us along the west side of the island, revealing a view of the city that truly captures the beauty of the Bay Area.

Saturday: Approximately 18.5 miles
On Saturday morning, we'll rise and shine, ready to hit the trail. We’ll leave camp the same way we came in - via ferry - watching the rising sun’s rays hit the city as we set sail for the East Bay. After docking at the Berkeley Marina, we’ll walk through quintessential Berkeley neighborhoods such as 4th Avenue, Solano Avenue, the Gourmet Ghetto and the UC Berkeley campus. We’ll also pass by the historic Claremont Hotel and skirt the Berkeley Hills as we head south towards Piedmont. Quaint shopping districts are numerous on this day's route and Grand Avenue is no exception. We'll enjoy a beautiful lunch stop on Lake Merritt then walk through beautiful Oakland City Center mall where a large cheering station awaits! Saturday's tour of the East Bay will end at Jack London Square where we’ll catch a ferry back to Treasure Island for another night of community, camaraderie and fun.

Sunday: Approximately 15.8 miles
The final day of our journey begins with a walk along the eastern side of Treasure Island to catch a ferry over to the beautiful North Bay. After docking in Tiburon, we’ll head north along beautiful Tiburon Linear Park. From there we’ll make our way towards Mill Valley by passing through Strawberry. Once on the multi-use path, we'll walk south towards Sausalito, Fort Baker and the Golden Gate Bridge. Look back north to Tiburon to see how far you’ve come and enjoy epic views of the bridge from Crissy Field as you walk along the water into the Marina District. Our final steps are taken in a victory walk from Moscone Recreation Center to Marina Green for a celebratory and emotional Closing Ceremony.

The Closing Ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. at:
Marina Green
Marina Boulevard & Fillmore Street
San Francisco, CA 94123

here's note from the 3-Day about closing ceremonies:

Your friends, family and supporters should arrive at the Closing Ceremony site at least one hour early to secure a space by the stage that will give them the best view of the program. They should be prepared for traffic congestion at the site, both before and after the ceremony.

The Participant Holding Area is closed to spectators. If you wish to meet with friends and family before the Ceremony begins, please exit the Holding Area and join them at the Closing Ceremony. Just remember to return to the Holding Area no later than 5:00 p.m. to join the victory walk.

Cheering Stations

A couple of years ago, I went to cheer my friend Carol at one of the cheering stations. I was so moved by that experience, that it inspired to sign up for the following year's 3Day event immediately.

If you have the time, and aren't too far away, please consider coming to visit us at one (or more!) of the cheering stations! From what I've heard, the San Francisco Bay Area has a surprisingly low turn out of people at the cheering stations compared to most other walks across the country. Let's turn that around! You'd be surprised at how motivating and exciting it is for the walkers to be cheered on along the route. It helps to give us renewed energy and determination.

If you plan to come to one, please let me know which day, and which cheering station. I can send you a text message when I'm at a rest to estimate what time I'll be in the vicinity of the cheering station.
