Beautiful morning for a walk

I went on a 7 mile walk this morning with Linda and Judy. It was an off-season walk for us, and just so nice to have a chance to catch up with both of them.

What a beautiful day! I didn't take many photos, but these two are very pretty. :)

Thanks to Judy for taking this photo. :)

Today's 4-1/2 mile Walk in Milpitas with my Parents

I was in Milpitas visiting with my parents and my Grandma today. This afternoon, I took a somewhat impromptu 4.5 mile walk with my parents!

It initially started with me suggesting that we all take a walk. I was thinking perhaps to the grocery store that's about a mile away. Then my Mom told me about some model homes that are a little further - maybe two miles away, that they walked to yesterday. I thought that would be fun. Then, my Mom suggested that we could wait another hour or so, and we could walk about 2 miles to go to dinner (at our favorite Sushi Restaurant in Milpitas). We thought it was a great idea - a nice walk. yummy food, plus later in the day, so it would be a little cooler.

The neatest part about the walk today was that we took the exact same route that I used to walk when I attended elementary school (grades 5-7). My elementary school is about 1-1/2 miles from our house, and the restaurant is about 1/2 mile further. It was pretty amazing, and very nostalgic for me to walk the same streets that I used to walk daily so many years ago. (35 years ago, if you must know!) There's an overpass that we had to walk up (and down) right before reaching the school. In the memory of my 10 year old self, it was a steep and long overpass. I've driven it many, many times since, but I haven't walked it in over 30 years. Compared to San Francisco hills, it was cake, but thinking back to when I was 10-12 years old, it certainly was pretty big! For three years, I walked, rode my bike, and even roller skated this route. Wild.

at the intersection before the overpass. There used to be a retired crossing guard who used to walk students across this intersection.

on the overpass!

The trees have grown a LOT over the past 35 years. There's my school near the middle of the photo

Curtner Elementary School! The front of the building looks largely the same, but there are so many extra classrooms/buildings on the sides that weren't there back in my day.

Another shot of the front - this part looks nearly identical to what I remember. Curtner Stallions. In my memory I thought we were Mustangs, but I guess not!

after another 1/2 mile, we made it to our dinner destination!

After our yummy dinner, we walked over to the new (to me) Milpitas Libary on Main Street. I hadn't been in before, so my parents gave me the tour. It's a gorgeous and very large building. Very impressive!

We walked home by taking another route. We walked up and over the overpass on Calaveras to Milpitas Blvd, then walked through the Milpitas Town Center and back home. If I had set my Walkmeter GPS, you would have seen that we did a neat circle around Milpitas. :)

It was the longest walk I think I've ever taken in Milpitas, and I enjoyed it immensely. I'm so glad my parents joined me on this walk. It was a really great experience down memory lane. :)

A Fitbit's Day in San Francisco

I did a fair amount of walking today- starting with my usual 2.5 mile neighborhood walk in the morning, followed by just the usual walking that may occur in my day here. I walked down to the Castro Muni and took the Metro to Van Ness and had lunch in Hayes Valley. It was such a nice day out that I decided to walk home.

Later, I walked down to Noe at Henry and had dinner at L'Ardoise (one of my very favorite restaurants in SF) with a couple of friends, then walked back home.

According to my Fitbit, that all added up to over 8.5 miles, which is great, but what really impressed me was the number of flights of stairs logged in for the day: 104 floors. That's San Francisco hills for you!! I love the hills. :)

My new daily walk...

Now that the weather has become less rainy, I've started to go out on more daily walks here in Bellevue. In San Francisco, I had a daily neighborhood walk route that I did a few times a week that was about 2.5 miles. I was wanting to start something similar here. (During the colder/rainy days, I've been utilizing the workout facility in our building - treadmill for 55 minutes while watching Hulu Plus!)

I think I've figured out a nice route that is pretty, and gives me lots of options of distance, safety, and beauty. I'm walking around the Downtown Bellevue area, staying on sidewalks or walking paths, and go through two different parks. The first park is the Bellevue Downtown Park which has a really lovely walking trail that goes the perimeter of the park. Each lap is 1/2 mile. Today I did about 1-1/2 laps both on my way out, and again on my way back. Nice way to get in some additional steps and distance.

A picturesque spot in Bellevue Downtown Park

From there, I walked over to Lake Washington Blvd, which is residential, and go down to Meydenbauer Beach Park. There's a nice set of stairs that go down (and again, up!) and the park goes all the way down to the water. It's very pretty and serene down there. Bonus: restrooms and water fountains if I go out on longer walks.

Pretty and tranquil view from Meydenbauer Beach Park

Another view of the Meydenbauer Beach Park - looking up from the water. So pretty

This is the furthest destination of my daily walk, and I circle back to the Bellevue Downtown Park, do another loop, and head back home.

I really love all of the various types of trees in Bellevue

With the two loops around the park, today's walk was just over 4 miles, in about an hour. My Fitbit also tells me that it's about 30 flights of stairs, and about 8,000 steps. A nice work out! :)

First long walk of the New Year

This morning's route

This morning, I went on a beautiful 7-mile New Year's Walk with some very great friends. This is my last full weekend in San Francisco for a while, so it was really nice having a chance to spend some quality time with these friends and have a nice walk together to kick off 2014. With all that's been going on lately, this was a much needed, and much appreciated getaway. Thank you, Linda, for organizing, and getting us out!

We met at the Land's End Visitor Center at 8:00. The main purpose of the walk was to go down towards the Labyrinth in Mile Rock Beach, and to leave our "Intentions" in the center of the Labyrinth. We made our way down to the labyrinth, followed the path to the center, and left our intentions. My intention for the new year is quite simple - Embrace the Changes of the coming year. :)

Today's Stairway Walk with Lee

My friend Lee asked me earlier this week if I felt like joining him for a stairway walk. Lee keeps a regular blog of his city walks, which also focuses (or, rather, mostly focuses) on gardens and plants. He's quite an expert in these things, and always find it interesting to go on walks with him. He knew that I walked a lot, and thought it would be fun to do one of these walks together.

Lee has a much better camera than my little iPhone 4, and he's got a great eye. You can see of our walk and some of the sights we saw on his blog.

My team had walked to the Moraga Stairs this past weekend, but I didn't join them since I had company in town. When Lee offered to do a stairway walk, I requested the "Golden Gate Heights" walk from the book "Stairway Walks in San Francisco", which Lee uses frequently, and which I got as a gift last year from Lizelle.

Unfortunately, I forgot to start my GPS walking app today, so I didn't track our milage. We walked for about an hour and a half at a leisurely pace, and there were lots and lots of stairs.

the map and turn by turn of today's route

While Lee's photos focused more on the surroundings and views, my photos focused more on all of the stairs that we walked up and down today. :)

I realized that I had only been to the Moraga/Mosaic stairs while on training walks with my team. That means that I never really slowed down to stop and really take a good look at the stairway. It's truly amazing and beautiful. I decided to take advantage of a quiet stairway and take lots of photos of each flight.

Thanks for the great walk this morning, Lee! I enjoyed it immensely, and look forward to climbing more stairs with you! xo
