I'm thrilled to report that Wallace's first 24 hours with us (and then some) has gone very well!! We are so happy with our new little dog, and we think he likes us, too!
It was a beautiful, warm, day in San Francisco, so we went outside several times today. We were very proud when he *ahem* did his business after breakfast this morning, and has had successful potty breaks throughout the day as well. *knock on wood*Thrilled that he hasn't had an accident in the house yet!*/knock on wood*
He really loved one of the little toys that we came home with from the SPCA yesterday, and played with that in the backyard this morning. After lunch, Dick and I went to our local pet store and bought him a few more things (boy, is it easy to drop a lot of $$ at the pet store when you first adopt a new pet!). We bought him more chew toys, soft toys, pull toys, and a ball. We introduced him to the ball this afternoon, and he really took to it.
He's getting pretty good at coming from his pen to the backdoor, and down the stairs outside to the lawn. We're still having problems getting him to come back up the stairs once we've finished. We also thought about taking him out the front door today, but he was way too nervous, so we decided against it. One day at a time, Wallace. :)
With all the outdoor activity, Wallace has taken a lot of indoor naps today. I'm hoping to walk him around the house (really just the back area) tomorrow, to get him more accustomed to just being with us more.
I just signed the three of us up for a 5-week basics training class (1 hour per week) at the SPCA that starts next Tuesday. That should be really helpful for all of us. Dick and I have also been studying a lot of YouTube videos on dog training. We are especially enjoying videos by a trainer named Zak George We're finding his tips to be very helpful.
We're super happy with how well Wallace has worked out for us so far. He's been such a good dog, and we're having so much fun spending time with him.
In case you're wondering, we continue to keep Noe separate from Wallace. She spends most of her time in our Bedroom on the upper floor of our house, so we are keeping her in there for a few days. Eventually, we'll let them smell each other under a door. Noe hasn't seemed to notice Wallace's scent on us yet, or doesn't mind it, so that's probably good.
