Carrières de Lumières

We went on a really neat day trip outing in Provence today! We went to an amazing multimedia exhibit called Carrières de Lumières. It is essentially an immersive multimedia art installation which is projected inside an old Limestone Quarry. It is set to music (be it classical, opera, or even Rock) and projects images, video and light onto the walls (which probably range from 20 feet to 50 feet), floors and ceilings. It's unlike anything I've ever seen before, and was such a fantastic experience. It may be most new favorite art installation!

It's really hard to describe how immersive and huge this piece was. The Limestone Quarry was enormous, and was on multiple levels. It was also a very high quality surround sound which made you feel like you were virtually swimming within these amazing images.

I've learned that the show changes annually. The show featured the art of Bosch, Brueghel and Arcimboldo. I saw that past/future shows featured Chagall, Picasso and others. I think it would be absolutely fascinating to see others. The complete show lasted roughly an hour. You can sit (lots of limestone benches around) stand, or walk around, and presumably, can stay as long as you'd like.

If you are even in the Provence Region, I highly recommend it! It was amazing, and I'm so glad we went to see it!
