La Taqueria: Now even more popular

Hands down, our favorite Taqueria in San Francisco is La Taqueria on Mission near 25th Street. We've been going for well over 15 years. It's always been a very popular place, with lines 20-30 people deep at any given time. Usually, we call in our order for take-out. We'll call about 15 minutes before we plan to get there, drive over, and avoid the line.

Last night, we tried to call in an order on our way home from the airport. Again, we were about 15 minutes away. For the first time ever, I was told that they were very busy, and that it would be at least 25 minutes before our order would be ready. Since we were in a cab, and were just going to do a quick drive-by, we had to cancel our order, rather than wait the extra 10 minutes or so. We figured we'd just go back for lunch today.

Reeves and Paula are visiting from Bellevue this weekend, and we thought it would be a great place to bring them. We arrived by Noon, which yes, is lunch time, but on the early side. Imagine our astonishment when we arrived and saw a line out the door! Usually the line spans the length of the interior wall. Today's line was at least 3 times as long, maybe four. It wrapped around all the interior walls, out the door, down the sidewalk, and around the corner!

I asked one of the employees when this change in the crowd happened. It's been a couple of months since we'd last been, and nothing had changed at that point. She told me that they were recently written up as "Best Burritos" in a magazine recently, and the crowds have been huge ever since. I later found out that it was an article in the Huffington Post. Here's the article.

So, we got in line. What else were we going to do? We had no pressing afternoon plans, we were hungry, and darn it, we wanted our burritos! The line took about 45 minutes for us to get through, and as always, it was well worth it!
