Anand Karaj (Marriage Ceremony)

This morning, we attended the Anand Karaj (Marriage Ceremony) of Jimmy and Pavan. The ceremony was held at a Sikh Temple, where we were instructed to remove our shoes, and cover our heads at all times.

The bride and groom had made arrangements to have turbans and people to tie them for each of the male guests.

The guys went to Jimmy's villa about an hour before our bus was to depart to have their turbans tied. Many of the guests wore traditional clothing, and everyone looked great.

The guests boarded a few buses which took us to the temple. The friends of the groom were instructed to stay on the bus, while the friends of the bride waited at the temple. (I stayed with several of my friends at the temple, while Dick and the guys stayed on the bus.) The bus was to drive down the street, unload, then Jimmy would be led down the street, towards the temple by all of his friends and family.

Jimmy's entourage was led by drummers, and Jimmy was sitting in an elaborately decorated rickshaw-like-seat, pulled by a bicycle.

The ceremony lasted about an hour, after which were treated to a buffet lunch of vegetarian foods. After we ate, we boarded our buses, and headed back to the hotel. The reception starts tonight at 8:30.

The same drummers who led Jimmy to the temple played for us as we all left after the cememony
