Day 3: Fitbit vs Apple Watch Fitness App

This will probably be my last day of tracking the difference (publicly, at least) between my Fitbit and my new Apple Watch Series 3 Fitness App.

For the second day in a row, the numbers were comparable (except for floors climbed) between the two devices, with the Apple Watch having slightly higher numbers.

I don't know, but the numbers from Monday(two days ago) were off by so much; I'm still wondering if there's something to be said about my shopping cart theory (though it sounds like that shouldn't be a factor).

Fitbit:
Steps: 19,604
Miles: 8.05
Floors: 86
Calories: 2,207
Active minutes: 131

Apple Watch Fitness tracker:
Steps: 20,126
Miles: 9.25
Floors: 47
Calories: 2,444
Active minutes: 123

This morning, I didn't take the morning walk that I did over the last two days, due to rain. I had lunch in the Embarcadero today and decided to walk from there through Union Square. After walking around Union Square for a bit, I decided to walk home. It was forecast to rain today and all day tomorrow, but there was no rain earlier today, so I wanted to be outside while I could.

Lots of rain in the forecast for tomorrow, so I'm assuming I won't get nearly as many steps in.

Like I said, this will probably be my last comparison of the two devices. Turns out they are close enough to each other, and that's all I really wanted to know.

Today’s Fitbit vs Apple Watch

Interesting: today, My Apple Watch's Fitness tracker was more generous than my Fitbit.

Fitbit:
Steps: 16,011
Miles: 7.29
Floors: 85
Calories: 2,157
Active minutes: 60

Apple Watch Fitness Tracker:
Steps: 16,879
Miles: 7.90
Floors: 56
Calories: 2,343
Active minutes: 88

Again, I know this doesn't really matter, but it is kind of interesting to compare and see how close (or not!) they are.

Fitbit vs Apple Watch Fitness

I got an Apple Watch (Series 3) just over a week ago. I decided that I will keep wearing my Fitbit, even though I will also be using the Fitness app on my watch to track exercise. I'm pretty attached to my Fitbit, as I've been using it for several years. I want to keep my records and milestones on it, and my friends list, plus I like the sleep tracker.

This morning, my friend Mike asked me if I had noticed much a discrepancy between the reading of the Fitbit to that of the Apple Watch App. I just checked (7:45pm) and here's what I found:

Fitbit:
20,040 steps
8.92 miles
100 Floors
2,054 calories

Apple Watch Fitness Tracker:
17,322 steps
8.11 miles
54 flights of stairs

Obviously, the Apple Watch tracks stairs differently, which isn't a huge deal. Almost 3/4 of a mile is kind of a big difference though, as is roughly 2,700 steps.

One thing I can think of that may have caused the discrepancy is that I went to Costco today. While at Costco, I was pushing a shopping cart most of the time. My Fitbit is clipped to my pocket, so it senses each time I take a step. My Apple Watch is on my wrist, which stays still when pushing a cart.

I realize this is not an exact science at all, but it is kind of interesting to compare the two side-by-side.

PS: I walked a lot more today than a typical weekday. Dick and I are trying to take a walks early in the morning before he goes to work. Plus, we are trying to take advantage of a beautiful day after the bad AQI, and in between rainy days.

AQI Reader

Ah, technology....

Dick ordered an AQI Detector, which just arrived.

Grateful for a home that is well insulated! The AQI indoors is a very healthy 15!

I walked down to the backyard, and it shows us at 137, which is Orange.

RAIN!!

Breaking News: It is raining in San Francisco! We can see Downtown (and beyond!) for the first time in 14 Days! According to my handy-dandy new AQI reader, we are at 4 inside the house, and a mere 21 outside!! It feels amazing to breathe clean air again. I have even opened a window for the first time in two weeks. So nice to let some fresh air in.

New Air Purifier

Things are looking up!! Our new air purifier was just delivered. I set it up, and turned it to "high". Minutes after, Dick sent me a message from work telling me that the air quality seems better. Coincidence? 😉

I just checked one source online, and it shows us in the Yellow Zone for the first time in 13 Days! 💛💛

As I looked out our backyard, I saw blue skies above! The view towards Downtown SF still isn't great, but better.

Rain is in the forecast to start early tomorrow morning through Friday. That should help with both the fires and the AQI. Fingers crossed!

Happy Sunday Before Thanksgiving!!

I just realized: Today is the Sunday before Thanksgiving!

Why is the worth mentioning? Because 20 years ago, on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, I went in my first (and only!) Blind Date with a guy named Dick Craddock.

I lived a block away from where we live now, and he lived about 10 blocks away in the other direction. He called me that late morning, and we agreed to meet at a coffee shop on Castro Street. I told him that I'd be the short Chinese girl with a bob (hairstyle) and he told me he'd be the straight guy. 😉

We met at 4:00 for coffee/tea, and that went well enough that we decided to walk across the street to a restaurant called The Patio.

We talked about Star Trek versus Star Wars, Macs versus PCs (I was a Mac, and he had worked for Apple in the mid-80s, which was crazy-dreamy for me), and all kinds of fun and geeky things.

By 7:00 we called it a night, as I specifically remember him saying that he wanted to get home in time for The Simpson's and The X-Files, since he hadn't set his VCR to tape them.

We had our first official date a couple of weeks later, but I always choose to remember the Sunday before Thanksgiving as the date to celebrate the day that we met.

The Moral of the Story: Sometimes you have to take a chance and go outside your comfort zone. You never know how it could change your life and what amazing adventures you may have!

Happy Sunday before Thanksgiving! ❤️

AQI 277

And this is what we've come to.

It's seriously surreal here in SF (and most of CA, for that matter). We are on Day Nine of unhealthy air quality. The AQI is 277 (that's the Purple, Very Unhealthy level). The smoke is so thick, and everyone is wearing masks outside (if you're lucky enough to have found them. Most stores are sold out.). Mind you, we're about 165 miles from the wildfires in Butte County. I know the AQI is much worse as you get closer.

Stay safe, CA friends, and stay indoors as much as possible.

Morning Mall Walk

Wallace and I met Carol, Mike and Kayak at the Stonestown Mall this morning. The air quality is still so bad now (RED/Unhealthy) that we can't take the pups outside for exercise. I saw a few posts from dog friends on Instagram of dogs walking around the mall. Thought it was a good option!

It worked out great! Both dogs seemed to enjoy the stimulating environment.

Lunch with the Alffs!!

What a wonderful, last-minute surprise! Terri's family was in town for a quick visit, and Derek contacted me around Noon to see if I was available to meet them for a quick lunch before they fly back to Burbank.

It has been five years since I last spent quality time with them, so it was really amazing to visit with them today! The kids are both in high school now.

I also got the bonus of meeting their very close family friend, Molly, who I have been hearing about for many, many years.

Their visit made me so happy.

Wallace’s Spa Day

Before and After!

I finally got into a good habit of brushing out Wallace's ears and tail nearly every day. This has prevented any mats between his last grooming appointment, 10 weeks ago. I may try to go a bit longer next time, as I really love the Shaggy DA look on him. (Although, I equally love the fresh haircut on him, too!)

Portrait Mode!

After almost three years, I finally but the bullet and invested in a new iPhone! It's the first time that I've had a phone with Portrait Mode as a feature. I've been looking forward to this!

My first two subjects were very cooperative, and I'm very pleased with their portraits!

Everyone is home again!!

Happy Animals.
Happy Humans.

Fitbit Stats

I'm guessing this may be the largest amount of steps I'll have over a 7-Day period for a while.

We just flew home from Maui (more pics to come!). One of my favorite things that Dick and I try to do when we travel to Hawaii is to stay on West Coast time (3-Hour difference), and wake up early to take long walks in the morning, before it gets too hot, and while the sun rises.

Dan has a routine of taking early morning walks (starting at 5:30am) , usually 7 or 8 miles, so we joined him every morning of our entire stay!! We did the full 7-miles three times, then did 4-5 on other mornings when we needed to finish earlier. I also often took a long afternoon walk to take advantage of the beautiful scenery and great location. Yesterday morning, we had to skip the walk to go out on a sunrise snorkel trip instead, but we still got in 5 miles in the afternoon.

Anyhow, each day, I walked 5-11 miles. I'm really happy that we stuck to it all week, and am especially proud of Dick for walking with us each early morning!!
